Central Oregon MTB

The Edison-Lava Trail to the south of Mount Bachelor and the Windigo between Lava Lake and Sparks Lake are not favorites of most locals. There are a lot of cinder type rocks on the east side of Edison Butte. The west side is pretty good down to Lava Lake. There are not many options to turn this into a loop, so it is usually done as an out and back, unless you are lucky enough to have someone dropping you off somewhere. The Windgo Trail to the north of Lava Lake including the Sparks Lake section can be very soft pumice, not to mention numerous downed trees for much of the season. This is not a real high priority trial for maintenance. The ride down from the horse camp south of Todd Lk. on the north side of Mount Bachelor is fun in the early season before it gets chewed up and dusty. The lower part near Sparks Lake has a lot of soft pumice. All of the above rides might be more enjoyable on a 29er with wide tires.

It is too bad that building good mountain bike trails in the old lava flow around Edison Snow Park is so difficult because there is a beautiful big stand of old growth ponderosa south of there. Wandering from one huge ponderosa to another with snowshoes and a gps unit in the winter is highly recommended. All the lava outcrops in the area made it diffucult to log and is what saved the trees. You just barely skirt through this stand of trees on the ride.
