The Edison-Lava Trail to the south of Mount Bachelor and the Windigo between Lava Lake and Sparks Lake are not favorites of most locals. Initially the ride goes through some old growth Ponderosa and interesting lava outcrops however it is hard to take these in with your eyes glued to the numerous rock features on the trial. In the first mile or so from the Edison parking lot there are a number of unmarked intersections. They are marked for skiing. If you pick the right trail, by say following tire tracks, eventually there start to be some small bike symbol markers. The trail generally heads south and downhill out of the Edison parking lot before heading west and up to the ridge. The upper third of the east side climb is one of the few trails in the Central Oregon area that is shared by ATVs and they have churned up quite a few orange to melon sized cinders in this section but, it is not as bad as it sounds. The climb from the east to the ridge is not bad and levels out numerous times to give you a break. The west side is pretty good down to Lava Lake. After the junction to the other ATV trails that go to Kwohl Butte and
Sheridan shelters, on the top of the ridge, the trial turns back into bike
only down to Lava Lake. The ATV trail to Kwohl Butte looks terrible from the intersection on top of the ridge but it is possible to ride up to the Kwol shelter where there are some awesome views of the high lakes and of the south side of Mt Bachelor. The ride back to that intersection on the ATV road is very fun as are the descents on both sides of the pass. Some people might not like descending on the cinders on the ATV section on the east side.
There are not many options to turn this into a loop, so it is usually done as an out and back, unless you are lucky enough to have someone dropping you off somewhere. The Windgo Trail to the north of Lava Lake including the Sparks Lake section can be very soft pumice, not to mention numerous downed trees for much of the season. This is not a real high priority trial for maintenance. The ride down from the horse camp south of Todd Lk. on the north side of Mount Bachelor is fun in the early season before it gets chewed up and dusty. The lower part near Sparks Lake has a lot of soft pumice. All of the above rides might be more enjoyable on a 29er with wide tires.
The area around Edison Snow Park is highly recommended for cross country ski touring or snowshoeing in the winter to better appreciate the huge old growth Ponderosa pines and lava formations. All the lava outcrops in the area made it diffucult to log and is what saved the trees. You just barely skirt through this stand of trees on the first part of this ride.
